Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of an LED bulb?

There are several advantages to upgrading to LED bulbs including an extremely longer life. The average incandescent bulb lifetime is 750-2,000 hours, whereas an LED lifetime is 20,000-50,000 hours.

LEDs have a higher lumen output per wattage, which makes them up to 80% more energy efficient.

LEDs are available in lots of different colour temperatures. Incandescent bulbs require gels and filters for different colour temperatures which can fade overtime.

LED bulbs do not get hot like the old fashion incandescent bulbs, which is great for heat sensitive areas.

How do I select the correct fitting type?

The standard lamp typically requires a bayonet B22 (22mm) or Edison screw E27 (27mm) base. The most commonly used base type in the UK is the bayonet, using our photo guide and your current light bulb, you should be able to determine which base you need fairly easily.

For Bayonet and Screw caps, measure width of the base.

For Pin bases, measer the space between the pins.

What are the differences between the colour temperatures?

Warm white 3000K and 2700K will give you a warm colour output similar to the old fashioned incandescent bulb.

Are LEDs safe?

Yes, unlike CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), LEDs do not contain mercury. They also give off comparatively little heat, making them safer to handle after prolonged use. The absence of glass enclosures and fragile parts also reduces the likelihood of breakage, so you won’t have to worry about broken glass.

Can I use a dimmable lamp on a non dimmable fitting or standard light switch?

Yes, you can use dimmable LEDs without a dimmer switch, just like normal light bulbs.

Will LED dimmable bulb work with all dimmer switches?

Unfortunately not, you would need to check if you have a compatible dimmer switch fitted.

There are two types of dimmer switch, leading edge and trailing edge. Trailing edge switches work best with LEDs. If your dimmer switch is old it’s likely a leading edge switch and worth changing to a trailing edge version.

If you are in doubt about the compatibility of your dimmer switches or how to make changes to your electrical circuits then we advise using a qualified electrician.

Are the Castello Style bulbs suitable for use outside the UK?

Europe and most other countries in the world use 220-240V whereas in Japan and in most of the Americas the voltage is between 100 and 127 volts.
